Molality Meaning

Molality is a concentration unit, that is used in chemistry & chemical laboratories to express the concentration of a solute in a solution. It is defined as the number of moles of the solute present in per kilogram of the solvent.

Molality Formula

The formula for molality (m) is given by:

Molality (m) = moles of solute / mass of solvent (in kg)

Unit of Molality

Unit of molality is mol/kg

Uses of Molality

The key distinction between molality and other concentration units like molarity is that molality is based on the mass of the solvent, not the volume. This makes molality particularly useful in situations where temperature changes can significantly alter the volume of the solution (as in the case of some gases), but the mass of the solvent remains constant.

Molality is often used in colligative property calculations, especially in situations involving changes in boiling point or freezing point, where the ratio of moles of solute to mass of solvent is critical.
