But the Moon is not standing still.

It is moving sideways around Earth at about 3,680 kilometres (2,290 miles) per hour.

As gravity pulls the Moon inward, the Moon keeps moving forward.

Imagine tying a ball to a string and swinging it around your head.

The string keeps pulling the ball toward your hand, but the ball keeps moving around in a circle instead of flying straight toward you.

Gravity works like the string.

The Moon keeps "falling" toward Earth, but because it is also moving sideways, it keeps missing Earth.

This continuous falling around Earth is called an orbit.

Artificial satellites stay in orbit for the same reason.

The same side of the Moon always faces Earth because the Moon spins once on its axis in about the same time it takes to orbit Earth.

As sunlight enters the droplet, it slows down and bends. This bending is called refraction.

Inside the droplet, some of the light reflects from the back surface.

As the light leaves the droplet, it bends again.

During this journey, white sunlight separates into different colours because each colour bends by a slightly different amount.

This process is called dispersion.
