The ranking is based on overall historical and scientific influence to the best of my knowledge, considering the book's contribution to scientific discovery, influence on later research, effect on the development of scientific disciplines, technological or social consequences, and influence on public understanding of science.

The list includes both books that transformed scientific research itself and books that profoundly changed how major scientific ideas were understood by society.

Important: Some historical books contain ideas that have subsequently been modified, refined or rejected. Their inclusion means that they were historically influential; it does not mean that every scientific statement in them remains accepted today. As we all know science is ever changing and evolving over time and that is the beauty od science.  

The numbers indicate overall influence and are not a chronological order.


What counts as a book?

For this list, "book" includes scientific monographs, treatises, textbooks, lecture-based works, scientific memoirs and major works of science communication written by scientists and scientifically trained scholars whose work had a major influence on scientific thought.

Scientific papers are not counted as separate entries. For example, Gregor Mendel's famous 1866 work on plant hybridisation was a scientific paper rather than a book, so it is outside the scope of this list.

Some scientists whose greatest contributions appeared mainly in journal papers are therefore absent even though their scientific importance is unquestionable. So this article is not include each and every important contribution as it is not possible to cover in a article.
